Carrie Burns, Volunteering @ EV

Anchor In: It's now time to take a look at something many students who attend Eastview High School do quite regularly, in an attempt to give back to their community.

Volunteering

Anchor Out: Thanks, Carrie. If you're trying to find something worthwhile to spend your time on look no further. There are plenty of opportunities one can take advantage of, so go ahead and go.

Sengstack's Video Shooting Tips

1. List and describe two things you already knew.
-A lot of the things on the 'shooting axioms' list I already knew, such as not overusing zoom, as well as things such as the rule of thirds.
-I also already knew about getting wide and tight shots; it can lead to the image looking more fresh, and the audio will be heard better, if there's any.

2. List and describe two things you learned for the first time.
-Leaning forward or backward to get different angels, instead of overusing the zoom in and out buttons.
-Film more shots then you need- it's better to cut a lot out than wishing you had more to show.

Shayna's Story

1. What is the role of the reporter's segues in this story?
The reporter's segues give more information to the viewer, little details such as how far she dropped, how long she was in the hospital, etc. The segues also helped move the story along so it didn't get too stuck on one particular topic/idea.

2. Why do you think she did not include a stand-up in this story?
I think she didn't include a stand-up in this story because it would have taken away from the initial feel and focus of what the story is about- I think it was a good choice, too.

3. What was the biggest surprise in the story?
For me, the biggest surprise was that Shayna was pregnant while she fell, and that the baby was born perfectly fine.

4. How does the story end with hope?
The story ends with hope in regards to both the baby and Shayna being healthy and okay, that they pulled through with it. Another thing that added to the feeling was Shayna's quotes about believing in miracles and God.

Video Coach- Three Shots

A wide shot (establishing shots) gives an overall feel for the setting and surrounding. ESTABLISHES location.

A medium shot gives less setting, more detail.

A tight shot (close up) gives a lot of detail to the viewer that they can't get/see in a wide shot.

These three angles are the building blocks of sequences.

Video Coach

A sound bite is a little piece of interview you'll include in your story.

B-Roll is the footage of whatever you're covering.

They're both the core of broadcasting stories.

Freed Hikers Recount 2 Years of "Lies and False Hope"

Topic: In 2010 3 hikers accidentally crossed the border of Iran without knowing, immediately being arrested minutes after. Although the woman of the group was released in 2010, the other two men, Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, were released only days ago.

Angle: The angle of this post is from the two guy's point of view, with them explaining what they went through and saw and heard in this Iranian prison.

Criteria:
Unusualness- it's not every day the US negotiates with other countries to pay the 1.5 million bail for two hostages in Iran.
Significance- This is really important because we're also in a war with Iran.
Prominence- It's a big ordeal because again, we're also at war with Iran.

If I was to make this a broadcast journalism piece, I'd defiantly want to show the reunion of the two men with their families when they get off the plane. I'd also want to maybe show pieces of their speech they gave describing what they went through in the prison.

The Boys of Winter

1. The reporter's stand up is when he's sitting in the stands along with everybody else.

2. Bob Dotson says the best place to put a stand up is in the middle of the story- this way they can give the viewer information that isn't able to be visualized, and it provides a nice transition.

3. In the middle of the story there should be 3-5 main points, which you should be able to support visually.

4. There are about 3 main points for the Boys of Winter story. The first is how fit George stays, jumping rope and using a stationary bike to work out a bit every day. The second point is explaining how these baseball games takes place among the elederly- how they've been going on for 60 years. The last main point in this story is how even though George is older, he still has a lot of love and support, for and from people- baseball, his new wife, and friends.

Facebook Makes Big Changes

On the morning of Wednesday September 21st millions of Facebook users discovered their beloved website had made many changes. The News Feed was changed up, you can now 'subscribe' to your favorite friends (like Twitter...), and the 'poke' feature has been hidden.

The company says even more changes are to come today.

I personally am a little tired of it all. Just when I'm getting used to a major change I never particularly liked in the first place, the creator goes and changes it up again- it's quite frustrating. I understand that it's an extremely competitive business, especially with networking sites like Twitter and Google+ popping up, but I think that if Facebook would stick to their original roots than more users would be happy and use it longer.

The Great Pumpkin Shortage

It's that time of year again.

Leaves are turning color and falling from the trees, bonfires are being attended, and the apple cider is being heated up and put into mugs to take on the road.

But this year farmers are sadly declaring that there's going to be a pumpkin shortage, thanks to all the wacky weather we've recieved this summer and Hurricane Irene happening. The biggest shortage is in the Northeast. The public is being recommended to buy their pumpkins early, or get creative and use a different vegetable to celebrate October 31st's Halloween with.

Criteria:

1. Unusualness- this is different, it doesn't happen every year.
2. Timeliness- it's the same season.
3. Proximity- this will affect a lot of us.

Ruby Bridges

Born in 1954 in Mississippi, Ruby Bridges was an iconic little girl during the Civil Rights Movement. At the age of 6, Ruby was the first little girl to attend an all white school- people were so upset by this, that they all removed their children. Day after day, angry mobs stood outside Frantz Elementary, yelling horrible things. And every day, Ruby had to walk past them, escorted by police officers.

Eventually things died down. The white children were enrolled back in school again, and people began to accept change. And it was all thanks to Ruby Bridges, the six-year-old.

Lettuce, Fresh from the Minnesota Zoo

The trend to be more Eco-friendly is taking it's hold on places everywhere- new products are being created for less harshness to the environment, people are carpooling more, and schools are turning off their electricity and air conditioning over the summer. The most recent big business to turn green is the Minnesota Zoo, in Apple Valley, Minnesota. What exactly is the zoo doing?

Well, they're growing their own vegetables.

"The vegetables aren't being transported except across the lawn and into the kitchen." David Schmidt, who tends to the plants, says.

The fresh vegetables grown are used in the Minnesota Zoo's restaurant, using less fuel to get to it's destination and tasting ten times better.

Jonesboro Shooting

What happened?

Two boys, one 11 and one 13, planned out a school shooting on MArch 24th, 1998. One of the boys by the name of Andrew Golden had asked to be excused for class. Once he was released he pulled the fire alarm and ran off to hide with the other boy, Mitchell Johnson, in the woods. Once all the staff and students were evactuated out of the building the boys open fired on them, killing four students and one teacher in the process; and additional ten children were injured in the process. When their stolen van was searched, officials found thirteen fully loaded firearms as well as numerous hunting weapons.

Who did it?

An 11-year-old by the name of Andrew Golden and a 13-year-old by the name of Mitchell Johnson.

Why?

Nobody knows!

I would most likely do this story from an angle that focuses on the victims, to sort of show what their lives were like before they got killed. I think this angle would bring sympathy from the public, and perhaps make the two boys convicted feel guilty.

Teen Accused of Faking Cancer for Money

Summary:

An 18-year-old by the name of Ruth Angelica Gomez has been accused of faking cancer to collect money donations for herself. The investigation into wither she was telling the truth or not began when someone complained that she did not appear to be ill.

Reaction:

I think this girl is incredibly selfish. There are so many people out there who truly do have leukemia and here somebody is taking advantage of people's free trust and support and money. I can't believe she would even have the guts to do it... doesn't she have a conscious?

Newsworthiness:
This story has two of the six Newsworthiness traits.

1. Timeliness- this has happened recently.
2. Unusualness- Most people usually don't fake a fatal illness to con people of their money.

Federal Board Urges Cell Phone Ban for Commercial Truckers

On Tuesday the National Transportation Safety Board recommended that commercial drivers be prohibited from using cell phones while on the job. By "using cell phones," the Board means both hands-held and hands-free.

The recommendation doesn't carry the full weight of the law, so technically it isn't legal. However, most of the time any ideas brought forward by the Board are a catalyst for local, state, and federal legislation, so there is a big chance this law might be considered seriously.

This decision was reached yesterday once they realized that a huge crash that had happened in Kentucky with a commercial vehicle was caused by the driver's distraction by his cell phone. Not only did 12 people die, but the driver was killed as well.

Google+ vs. Facebook

More than 200 million people play or use the games available on Facebook each month.
Although these games a free, players do have the opportunity to invest real money into it in order to advance higher up and be more successful in their virtual world- because of this, developers have made millions.
Well, now Google+ wants a piece of this success and millions.
I personally support Facebook more than Google. To me, Google should exist to be the search engine I go to whenever I need to look something up- not a social networking site like Facebook. I feel that if Google spends all it's time and resources on attempting to replace Facebook as the top social networking site then the quality of it's search engine and results will decrease. Likewise, if Facebook spends all it's time attempting to stay on top, they'll start inventing millions of features that will confuse and annoy it's users, causing them to eventually abandon it all together.

9/11 Memorial Opens to the Public

Ten years after the ill-fated terrorist attacks on the twin towers in New York, the United States are slowly getting back on their feet. With several construction projects in the making to help commemorate those lost in the attacks, the first official memorial opens to the public today for all to see. Families who had lost loved ones on that day were invited yesterday, before it opened, to go see it, and many claimed it gave them "chills" at how powerful the whole memorial felt.

Man Angry with Minnesota Department of Transportation over 9/11 Plans

Dan Hanson, a man who has put together annual commemorations for 9/11 the past three years, is frustrated. Usually he and other volunteers like to put a 20-foot-long banner over a major highway bridge- this year, however, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is saying no. They claim that although Hanson has done it previous years, it's still dangerous. Winds could rip it down and on to the highway, causing many crashes. Instead the department proposes that the banner be fastened to handheld poles, claiming it much more safe; Hanson doesn't agree.
